What is the Minifig Trap?
Many used LEGO® sets, especially popular or UCS ones, get parted out. Sellers remove the minifigures (which often hold a big chunk of the value) and sell the rest of the set (bricks, instructions, box) at a seemingly bargain price. It looks like a steal… until you price out replacing those minifigs on BrickLink or similar sites. Suddenly, your “deal” becomes more expensive than buying the set complete or even new.

This massive Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series set is a perfect illustration.
- Used complete set (6-month average on BrickLink): Around $341.
- Minifigures alone if bought separately: Approximately $269.

If you grab one of those incomplete versions and then track down the figs, you’re looking at a total of $400–$500. That’s more than the average price for a new set (recently a bit over $400 on the secondary market). You end up paying a premium for the hassle of hunting individual minifigs, potential condition mismatches, and missing the satisfaction of a complete set.
